The technology involved in making contact lenses has developed so rapidly over the last decade that even if you have previously not been able to wear contact lenses it is always worth enquiring about when speaking to your current optician.
1. Contact lenses are uncomfortable
Once you're used to wearing contacts, most people don’t experience any discomfort at all. Modern materials are very soft and full of moisture to keep your eyes comfortable all day long.
2. Contact lenses can get stuck behind my eyes
The white of your eye is covered by a thin membrane that connects to the inside of your eyelids, making it impossible for a lens to get lost behind your eye.
3. Contact Lenses can pop out my eye.
Today's modern contacts — including rigid gas permeable (GP) contacts — fit closer to the eye so it's very rare for a contact lens to dislodge from a wearer's eye unexpectedly.
4. I cant' wear contacts lenses.
Yes, you can! Thanks to advances in contact lens technology in recent years, just about everyone can wear contacts. For example, there are many bifocal contact lenses for people with presbyopia; soft, rigid and hybrid contact lenses that correct astigmatism; and custom contact lenses that can correct even the most challenging prescriptions.
5. I only need glasses for reading so contact lenses are not an option for me
There are contact lenses specifically designed for presbyopia, or age-related long sightedness. If you need glasses for reading newspapers, books or menus, then contact lenses might be an easier, hassle free option as they give you clear vision all day
6. Contact lenses can get stuck to your eye
Contact lenses cannotget stuck to your eye if you follow your optician’s advice about wear, care and removal. Remember to remove your lenses before sleep, and if they feel dry try some rewetting drops before removing them.
7. Contact lenses are difficult to look after
With daily disposable contact lenses you simply discard them after use and start with a fresh pair the next day. If you have reusable daily wear contact lenses, the cleaning routine today with modern solutions is relatively simple
8. Contact lenses are expensive.
Contact lenses vary in cost, just like the cost of glasses varies depending on the brand selected, the type of frame and lenses chosen. With modern technology and a variety of manufacturers they can be the same as some glasses.
9. Contact lenses are difficult to wear.
Just like riding a bike contact lenses take practice but your optician will always take time to ensure you are capable of taking them in and out before letting you take them home to try. However like most things with practise it will become second nature.
